Regular Board Meeting Highlights - May 7, 2019

May 7, 2019 - The Board of Trustees is pleased to share with all education stakeholders the highlights of our recent Board meeting held on Tuesday, May 7, 2019. The adopted minutes will be available on our website following the next Regular Board meeting.

  • The Board approved the preliminary budget assumptions for 2019-2020 as recommended by the Audit Committee. The Board is required to provide a preliminary 2019-20 budget to Alberta Education by June 30th. These assumptions are used to develop the preliminary budget. These budgets are based on assumption that have been made by management based on the best information available as Alberta Education has not released the funding manual for the 2019-20 school year.
  • The Board reviewed whether to adjust compensation as a result of the elimination of the one third tax exemption in the federal budget at the request of the Audit Committee. Using basic federal and provincial tax rates, compensation would need to be adjusted by 11% in order to offset the removal of the one third tax exemption and maintain the net compensation at the level prior to change in legislation. Furthermore, the Board approved the adjustment of trustee compensation to offset the changes to federal legislation.
  • The Board received as information the 2019 ThoughtExchange - Top 1000 Thoughts Report. It is a review and summary of the ThoughtExchange stakeholder engagement with the division that the Board may use to better understand the review and development of the Board's Education Plan.
  • The Board welcomed a delegation from Memorial Composite High School and Connections for Learning. Students Rayanne Somerville and Alyssa Stingley joined students from the Y(Our) Program at Connections for Learning at a recent week-long learning opportunity to Elevate Aviation at the Edmonton International Airport.
